Brahimi made the request in talks with Iranian leaders on Sunday in Tehran, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's closest regional ally in his campaign to crush a 19-month-old uprising.
The veteran Algerian diplomat said the civil war in Syria was getting worse by the day and stressed the urgent need to stop the bloodshed, his spokesman said on Monday.
He suggested the truce be held during the Eid holiday, which starts around Oct. 25 and lasts several days. It would "help create an environment that would allow a political process to develop".
There was no immediate response from either side and with fighting raging on Monday in several Syrian cities and in the countryside, it was not clear if they would want to put the brakes on any battlefield advantages.
The crucial strategic battles in a conflict that has claimed more than 30,000 lives since March 2011 are being fought in an arc through western Syria, where most of the population lives.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two rebel-held districts in northeast Aleppo, al-Shaar and Karm al-Jabal, came under heavy bombardment from Assad's forces on Monday. It also reported fierce clashes in the district of Jdeideh, just north of the ancient citadel in Syria's biggest city.
Syrian television showed footage of soldiers inside Aleppo's Great Mosque, which dates back to the 8th century and was badly damaged in fighting between government forces and rebels battling for control of the Old City.
The mosque's medieval arches were charred, its elaborate wooden panels smashed and metal filigree lanterns lay broken in the courtyard. The sound of nearby gunfire could be heard.
Assad issued a decree on Monday establishing a committee to restore the mosque, though it was not clear how that would happen with fighting still raging in Aleppo.
In northwestern Idlib province, government warplanes bombed several towns on Monday, the pro-opposition Observatory said.
Rebels had surrounded an army garrison on Sunday close to a northwestern town in the latest push to seize more territory near the border with Turkey, opposition activists said.
Several hundred soldiers were trapped in the siege of a base in Urum al-Sughra, on the main road between Aleppo, Syria's commercial and industrial hub, and Turkey.
"Rebels attacked an armoured column sent from Aleppo to rescue the 46th Regiment at Urum al-Sughra and stopped it in its tracks," Firas Fuleifel, one of the activists, told Reuters by phone from Idlib province, the main base and supply route for insurgents fighting in Aleppo.
He said a jet was shot down while trying to provide air support to the column.
Assad's forces still control the city of Idlib on a main highway linking Aleppo to the port of Latakia, making the route an important rebel target.

Reflect upon the great speakers you have been privileged to see. Replay----in your mind----a favorite experience watching a top speaker. Observe the stance, the moves, the look in the eyes, the choice of words, the facial expressions, the pauses, everything about this person.
Is all of this contrived? Were you seeing an example of a clever performance by a skilled actor? I doubt it. You probably experienced essence revealed.
Some years ago, through a high level personal connection, I got a Press Pass, a credential that got me into a major USA political party's national convention. A USA presidential candidate was to be nominated. A prominent politician won the nomination. You'd know his name.
The time came for him to give his acceptance speech. I managed to maneuver myself----as part of the Press Corps---- within 15 feet of where he stood. I watched him carefully. I saw a masterful performance. That's what it was----a performance. It was brilliant, except for one thing. There was no essence revealed. (In retrospect, I now feel there was no essence to reveal.)
The speech was an example of hollow excellence. Like a classic wine bottle with no wine in it. There was ho heart, no soul, no authenticity. (He lost the election, drifted into obscurity.) The memory of this speech burned itself into my brain. This may be why I have such a passion for revealed essence.
Do you choose to reveal your essence every time you stand before an audience?
MY RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Look within: Look for your authentic gift, your talent, your knack, your aptitude.
2. Tune in to your intuition, to the tug at your heart.
3. Note the field, the topic, the issue you are drawn to.
4. When you recognize it, accept it, embrace it, and engage it.
5. Study it like Leonardo, "with an unprecedented ardour of delight and curiosity."
6. Organize your findings. Start to write articles, papers, maybe a book.
7. Promote yourself: Cause your target market to know of your unique expertise and your availability.
Expect the confluence of these elements, powered by your energy and iron resolve, to propel you as far as you can go as a speaker.

Incidents/Injuries: Fitness Anywhere has received 570 reports of the strap length-adjustment buckles breaking with 82 reports of the user falling, including 13 reports of head, face, shoulder and hip injuries.
Description: This recall involves older model ?Professional? (P1) and ?Tactical? (T1) TRX Suspension Trainer devices manufactured between January 2006 and July 2007. The recalled products? anchor straps are yellow or khaki nylon with a carabiner at the top end and a black nylon loop on the bottom end. A black and yellow or black and khaki nylon strap is threaded through the black nylon loop on the anchor strap to form a ?Y.? On each side of the ?Y,? the strap has a cam buckle, which is used to adjust the length of the straps. Each end of the ?Y? strap has a foam-covered hand grip and a foot cradle. The recalled devices have hand grips with no end bumpers, which are black plastic caps covering the ends and preventing the plastic under the foam from being exposed. They do not have an extra nylon loop, called a locking loop, attached at the point where the anchor strap and the ?Y? straps are joined and designed to limit the slippage of the straps.
