In some ways, I hate to admit that my daughter has both the ?Fisher-Price Loving Family DREAM Dollhouse? and the ?Fisher-Price Loving Family GRAND Dollhouse? and while they are very similar in some cases the ?Dream Dollhouse? has a few additional features that has made it the more popular choice (at least for my family). A few notes on the ?Dream House?

One thing I like about the Fisher-Price dollhouses is that they have lots of ?Staying Power?. This means that your child is just as likely to be playing with this in 12 months as they are the day they pull it out of the box. There are plenty of toys that have an immediate wow, but very few have the staying power of the Fisher Price Loving Family Dream House.

Afghan killings case testing military system

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) ? The U.S. military has been criticized for its spotty record on convicting troops of killing civilians, but a hearing against Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales involving a massacre in Afghanistan has shown that it isn't like most cases.

Government prosecutors have built a strong eyewitness case against the veteran soldier, with troops recounting how they saw Bales return to the base covered in blood. And in unusual testimony in a military court, Afghan civilians questioned via a video link described the horror of seeing 16 people killed, mostly children, in their villages.

Law experts say the case could test whether the military, aided by technology, is able to embark on a new era of accountability.

Bales faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder. The preliminary hearing, which began Nov. 5 and is scheduled to end with closing arguments Tuesday, will determine whether he faces a court-martial. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

The U.S. military system's record has shown it is slow to convict service members of alleged war crimes.

A range of factors make prosecuting troops for civilian deaths in foreign lands difficult, including gathering eyewitness testimony and collecting evidence at a crime scene in the midst of a war.

At Bales' preliminary hearing, the prosecution accommodated the Afghan witnesses, including children, by providing the video link and holding the sessions at night. The military said it intends to fly the witnesses from Afghanistan to Joint Base Lewis-McChord if there is a court martial.

"I think it shows they're going to prosecute this case no matter what it takes," said Greg Rinckey, a former Army prosecutor from 1999-2004 who is now in private practice. "This was an atrocity. This is not the fog of war. It's not like we were calling in artillery and an artillery shell landed in a village."

Prosecutors say Bales, 39, slipped away from remote Camp Belambay to attack two villages early on March 11, killing 16 civilians, including nine children. The slayings drew such angry protests that the U.S. temporarily halted combat operations in Afghanistan, and it was three weeks before American investigators could reach the crime scenes.

Through a video monitor in a military courtroom near Seattle, Bales saw young Afghan girls smile beneath bright head coverings before they described the bloodbath he's accused of committing. He saw boys fidget as they remembered how they hid behind curtains when a gunman killed people in their village and one other.

And he saw dignified, thick-bearded men who spoke of unspeakable carnage ? the piled, burned bodies of children and parents alike.

From the other side of that video link, in Afghanistan, one of the men saw something else ? signs that justice will be done.

"I saw the person who killed my brother sitting there, head down with guilt," Haji Mullah Baraan said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. "He didn't look up toward the camera."

Baraan was one of many Afghan witnesses who testified in Bales' case by live video link over the weekend.

"We got great hope from this and we are sure that we will get justice," Baraan said.

Throughout history, troops have been accused of heinous crimes involving civilians in countries where wars are waged. But rarely have villagers who witnessed the horror testified in a U.S. military court ? often because of the costs and logistics of bringing them to the United States.

Villagers may be leery to leave their homeland to go to a foreign country and confront members of one of the mightiest militaries in the world. And as foreign nationals, they cannot be subpoenaed.

While there have been cases of troops being sentenced to life in prison for committing atrocities, the vast majority of those convicted for extrajudicial killings have been let off with little to no jail time for crimes that in civilian courts could carry hefty sentences, legal experts say.

Former U.N. Special Rapporteur Philip Alston ? who was invited by the United States to examine extrajudicial killings in Iraq and Afghanistan ? pointed out the January 2006 sentencing of Chief Warrant Officer Lewis E. Welshofer Jr.

He was given two months confinement to his base, a fine of $6,000, and a letter of reprimand after being found guilty of negligent homicide and negligent dereliction of duty for the death of an Iraqi general who had turned himself in to military authorities.

"Military records released in Freedom of Information Act litigation make clear that the Welshofer sentence is not an anomaly," Alston wrote in a 2010 report.

The military hasn't executed a service member since 1961, when an Army ammunition handler was hanged for raping an 11-year-old girl in Austria.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the death penalty is possible if Bales is found guilty.

Afghan witnesses recounted the villagers who lived in the attacked compounds and listed the names of those killed. The bodies were buried quickly under Islamic custom, and no forensic evidence was available to prove the number of victims.

The witnesses included Zardana, 8, who sipped from a pink juice box before she testified. She suffered a gunshot wound to the top of her head, but after two months at a military hospital in Afghanistan and three more at a Navy hospital in San Diego, she can walk and talk again.

None of the Afghan witnesses were able to identify Bales as the shooter, but other evidence, including tests of the blood on his clothes, implicated him, according to testimony from a DNA expert.

Several soldiers testified that Bales returned to the base alone just before dawn the morning of the attacks, covered in blood, and that he made incriminating statements such as, "I thought I was doing the right thing."

Prosecutors say he also made a mid-massacre confession, returning to the base to wake another soldier and report his activities before heading out to the other village. The soldier testified that he didn't believe Bales and went back to sleep.

Bales, an Ohio native and father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., has not entered a plea and was not expected to testify at the preliminary hearing. His attorneys say he has post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered a concussive head injury while serving in Iraq.

Are You A Giver Or A Taker? 5 Steps To Become A Giver

This is one thing I try to ask myself on a daily basis. I want to be a giver, not a taker. Why, you may ask. Well, I find that being a giver is much more rewarding than being a taker.

This is not to say that when you given something you should not take it. Along with learning to be a good giver, you also need to learn how to be a gracious receiver. This is different than being a taker.

A taker drains people. They abuse people. They act as though everyone is put on earth to do for them. I know many of those types of people, and quite frankly, I avoid them at all costs. They will drain the life out of you. Look inside yourself and see if that is the kind of person you are.

Five Steps to Take to be a Giver, Not a Taker

1. ?Write down all the members of your household and list one thing you will do for them today with no agenda attached. You do not expect anything in return for doing this.
2. Do small things all day long for coworkers, those in the grocery line, at the bank, on the street. This could be helping someone load their groceries, letting someone in front of you in line, opening a door for someone.
3. When you do things for others do not tell anyone. Do not brag about what you have done. Just do them and be satisfied that you helped someone today.
4. Show appreciation when someone does something for you. Say thank you.
5. Write a note to someone you care about and praise them for things they do.

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. If you take the steps above and do at least one -- or more-- every day for 21 days you should build a habit of being a giver.

You will also learn to appreciate things people do for you. We should notice throughout the day what people do for us. Sometimes we just come to expect it and don't realize that those kind people really don't have to do that for us.

How many times has someone does something for you and you just kind of grunted and walked away or dismissed them. This can be very hurtful to others. People being kind should be acknowledged.

If you are a giver, good for you! But there is probably one thing you need to learn to do ad that's become a gracious receiver. I have met many people that will give their time, give their money, give their life, but when someone gives them something or tries to help them with something, they are just awful! They will say, no, I don't need your help. Or no, don't give me a gift. Who are you to deprive someone else of being a giver? Why would you take that joy away from them?

We need to be gracious receivers. We need to be excited and let the giver know that we really appreciate what they have done for us. Just because you assign yourself as a giver doesn't mean you can take the joy of someone else being a giver to you. Be a gracious receiver as well as a humble giver.

Official backs studying quake risks at nuke plants

ATLANTA (AP) ? Recent earthquakes demonstrate the need for the nation's nuclear industry to re-evaluate the geologic hazards facing power plants, a process that has already started, the new chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said this week.

NRC Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane said in an interview that a spate of natural events shows the importance of further study.

"I think what this highlights to us ? especially to me as a geologist ? is the importance of paying close attention to earth processes and making sure we properly account for them in ensuring that the plants operate safely," Macfarlane said.

In March, the NRC instructed power companies to re-evaluate the seismic and flooding hazards that their power plants face. While such a re-evaluation had been discussed for years, the issue accelerated after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami crippled reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in Japan, leading to multiple meltdowns and radioactive releases. Later that year, the North Anna nuclear plant in Virgina was struck by an earthquake that caused peak ground movement at twice the level at which the plant was designed. No major damage or complications were reported.

Federal officials later cleared that plant to resume operations.

Nuclear plants in the eastern and central United States will have until the end of 2013 to finish the re-evaluation, she said. New evaluations for nuclear plants on the West Coast will take until 2015 to complete since they face more varied geologic conditions.

"If a plant is found to be deficient then, yes, it will have to get up to its new design basis," Macfarlane said.

President Barack Obama appointed Macfarlane, a geologist and expert on nuclear waste, to the post in May after former NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko announced his resignation. Jaczko pushed for safety reforms but was criticized for a style that his fellow commissioners and agency employees described as bullying. Macfarlane traveled to Atlanta this week to address top nuclear executives gathered for a conference of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.

Her term runs through 2013. Macfarlane had said she planned to seek re-appointment if Obama won the presidential election.

Amnesty: Nigeria denies rights to sect suspects

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria is illegally holding hundreds of people suspected of participation in violence by a radical Islamist sect in inhumane conditions and without access to lawyers, a rights group warned Thursday.

The report released by Amnesty International alleges most of those imprisoned around the country are held without criminal charges and suggests that some have been summarily executed by security forces before facing trial. Some of those detained told the rights group that they were shackled for days, forced to sit in their own excrement in overcrowded cells while watching other prisoners get beaten and coerced into confessions.

Amnesty also blamed both the Nigerian government and the Islamist extremist sect, known as Boko Haram, in the report for likely committing crimes against humanity as the guerrilla conflict engulfing the nation's Muslim north continues to kills civilians.

"There is a vicious cycle of violence currently taking place in Nigeria," the report reads. "The Nigerian people are trapped in the middle."

Security forces routinely deny committing abuses, though the nation has a long history of abuses and so-killed extrajudicial killings being carried out by police officers and soldiers. Military spokesman Col. Mohammed Yerima said soldiers do hold prisoners, but only to do a "thorough job" investigating their backgrounds. He said some had falsely reported neighbors as Boko Haram members out of petty disputes.

"We don't torture people. We interrogate them and find out if they are members of the Boko Haram," Yerima told The Associated Press. "We don't have any concentration camp that they are talking about. All we have is offices where we work."

In a statement Thursday, federal police spokesman Frank Mba said authorities had "begun a comprehensive and critical study of the report." Mba did not address any of the allegations made against the Nigeria Police Force.

The Amnesty report comes as both Nigeria's government and Boko Haram faces increasing international condemnation. Violence blamed on Boko Haram has killed more than 720 people this year alone, according to an AP account ? the deadliest year since the sect began its attacks in 2009. A Human Rights Watch report in October also accused Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram of likely committing crimes against humanity in their fighting.

The Amnesty report includes claims of killings, house burnings and rapes carried out by security forces, allegations that have trailed the government's response to Boko Haram for months. Amnesty estimates that more than 200 suspected Boko Haram members are being held at a barracks in Maiduguri, while more than 100 others are being held at a police station in Abuja. Dozens of others probably are being held at the headquarters of the State Security Service, Nigeria's secret police, and others elsewhere, Amnesty said.

Those held largely do not know where they are detained, cannot contact their families or speak to lawyers, in contravention of Nigerian law, Amnesty said. Many are shackled together for nearly the entire day, the report said. Those held at the police station in Abuja are kept in a former slaughterhouse where chains still hang from the ceiling, the rights group said.

"There were shots in the night. I was hearing the shot of guns but I didn't know what they are doing," said one former detainee at the police station quoted in the Amnesty report. "When (the police) were collecting statements, some of us cannot speak English, and some of the officers cannot speak our language, so those that have difficulty, they have been beaten ... Our lives were ? we were not alive. We had no food, no water and no bath."

Others told Amnesty that soldiers beat at least one prisoner with an electrical cable, while others were denied access to medicine and care. In the report, Amnesty said it requested to see prisons, police stations, military detention centers and holding cells of the Nigeria's secret police, but did not get access to the facilities.

Those arrested by police in Nigeria routinely face years of imprisonment before even being brought to court, due to the country's creaking judicial system. That has only been exacerbated by the influx of new suspected Boko Haram members, many of whom remain held by a military that does not hand them over to civilian authorities, Amnesty said.

"The failure to prosecute Boko Haram suspects has meant that justice is not being seen to be done, and confidence in the security forces to address the crimes and human rights abuses committed by Boko Haram is being eroded," the report reads.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country. The sect has killed both Christians and Muslims in their attacks, as well as soldiers and security forces. Despite leaders enacting martial law and sending more troops into the region, the sect's attacks continue unstopped.

Recently, the military claimed it killed a number of the sect's senior leaders and it put out statements claiming to have killed dozens of other members in its operations. However, some worry those killed by the army include civilians, especially after soldiers in the northeast city of Maiduguri killed at least 32 civilians in a reprisal attack following a suspected Boko Haram bombing last month.

Meanwhile, the killings attributed to the Islamist sect continue unstopped. Attacks by Boko Haram on Tuesday killed at least four people and saw sect members burn a police station, a school, a church and a mobile phone tower, witnesses and the military said.

?They?re not sure who to talk to about it (and) many parents would be completely unaware of what?s happening.?

Dr. Byrne also offers her opinion as to the pedagogical purpose of state schooling, but notes the government was not responding to her concerns.

She said she had met with government officials but they were ?too frightened? about losing the Christian lobby vote to intervene.

Really? That would be a better story if true ? politicians cowed by the Australian Christian Lobby into mandating Christian indoctrination in state schools.

Where does one begin with this mess? The article is lacking details and hard numbers ? 24 families were interviewed the story says yet we do not know what sort of sample this was. Were there no voices among this survey who spoke in favor of religious education? No independent experts who could speak to the value or purpose of the government?s religious education curriculum? No government spokesmen to respond to the charge that they are supine in the face of the Christian lobby?

The comments reported seem out of proportion to the alleged offense. Was Mel Gibson?s Passion of the Christ screened for six yearolds? The facts offered in support of the argument are gossip.? Who is speaking? How can we judge their credibility? Are they cranks or is this a serious issue? Are we to take seriously the complaint that one child told another that he would ?burn in hell? before stabbing him with a pencil? If so, on what planet do these people live? Have they no knowledge of the school yard? There is no way to tell with this mess of a story.

Part of the problem may well be the author of this article writes primarily for News Corp?s opinion website, The Punch. This story however is not presented as an op-ed piece nor as a column but a straight news story. Yet if fails even the rudimentary tasks of journalism as it eschews balance in favor of hyperbole and one sided reporting.

However, there has been no attempt to disguise the bias. The sub headlines of this story lay out the direction the story will take.

Which leads me to ask, should News Corp subscribers be exposed to this drivel?

Behind the secularist screed there is a theological issue being expressed ? somewhat imperfectly. The argument proffered in academic circles most notably by?Carlson Brown and Parker is that women and children in Western societies are acculturated to accept abuse. The doctrine of the atonement ? especially the penal substitutionary atonement theory espoused by evangelicals ? is responsible for it has conditioned women to remain ?silent for years about experiences of sexual abuse, to not report rape, to stay in marriages in which they were battered.?? They believe the cross ? the image of Christ crucified ? symbolized God?s divine will that his son should suffer. Carlson Brown and Parker used the analogy of ?divine child abuse? to protest the belief that suffering could be redemptive.

?Divine child abuse is paraded as salvific and the child who suffers without even raising his voice is lauded as the hope of the world,? they argued, postulating abuse as the basis of the Christus Victor theory where god offers ?Jesus as bait? for Satan. Anselm?s argument for an atonement where only God?s son could pay the debt humanity owed to God, provided a theological excuse for child abuse.

When parents have an image of God righteously demanding the total obedience of his son ? even obedience to death ? what will prevent the parent from engaging in divinely sanctioned child abuse? The image of God the father carrying out and demanding the suffering and death of his own son has sustained a culture of abuse and sustained the abandonment of victims of abuse and oppression.

Abelard?s moral influence theory is given short shrift as well by Carlson Brown and Parker for the belief that an ?innocent suffering victim and only an innocent, suffering victim for whose suffering we are in some way responsible has the power to confront us with out guilt and move us to a new decision.? A wag might conclude from all this that John?s Gospel really meant to say For God so hated the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should perish and have everlasting trauma.

The claim that children were ?tormented by gruesome images of Jesus on the Cross? put forward by the author could well have been written by someone from outside a Christian influenced society who comes to the cross a stranger, or it could from within that portion of the Christian tradition persuaded by modern critiques of the classical theory of the atonement. Virtual reality 'beaming' technology transforms human-animal interaction

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Using cutting-edge virtual reality technology, researchers have 'beamed' a person into a rat facility allowing the rat and human to interact with each other on the same scale.

Published October 31 in PLOS ONE, the research enables the rat to interact with a rat-sized robot controlled by a human participant in a different location. At the same time, the human participant (who is in a virtual environment) interacts with a human-sized avatar that is controlled by the movements of the distant rat. The authors hope the new technology will be used to study animal behaviour in a completely new way.

Computer scientists at UCL and the University of Barcelona have been working on the idea of 'beaming' for some time now, having last year digitally beamed a scientist in Barcelona to London to be interviewed by a journalist.

The researchers define 'beaming' as digitally transporting a representation of yourself to a distant place, where you can interact with the people there as if you were there. This is achieved through a combination of virtual reality and teleoperator systems. The visitor to the remote place (the destination) is represented there ideally by a physical robot.

During the human-animal beaming process the human participants in the system were in a virtual reality lab at the Mundet campus of the University of Barcelona. The rat was located around 12 km away in an animal care facility in Bellvitge.

Tracking technology was used to track the movements of the rat in its arena, and the tracking data was transmitted over the internet to the computers running the virtual reality simulation in Mundet. This tracking information was used to control a virtual human character (an avatar) that represented the rat so that whenever the rat moved its avatar moved too, in a representation of the rat arena but scaled up to human size. Hence the human participant shared the virtual arena, which looked like a room with some pictures on the walls, with a humanoid avatar.

The movements of the human in the virtual reality were also tracked, and the data sent to computers in Bellvitge that controlled a small robot that was located in the rat arena. Whenever the human moved in the virtual space the robot moved in the rat space.

Putting all this together -- the rat interacted with a rat sized robot that represented the remotely located human, and the human interacted with a human sized avatar that represented the remotely located rat.

Professor Mandayam Srinivasan, author of the paper from the UCL Department of Computer Science and MIT, said: "Beaming is a step beyond approaches such as video conferencing which do not give participants the physical sensation of being in the same shared space, and certainly not the physical capability to actually carry out actions in that space."

He added: "The process demonstrated here not only shows the range of our technology, but also provides a new tool for scientists, explorers or others to visit distant and alien places without themselves being placed in any kind of danger, and importantly, to be able to see animal behaviour in a totally new way -- as if it were the behaviour of humans."

Professor Mel Slater, also from the UCL Department of Computer Science and also ICREA, University of Barcelona said: "In the paper we used the idea of representing the rat as if it were a human, but there would be many other possibilities. One idea is that using this technology behavioural scientists could get insights into behaviour by observing it, and taking part in it, through this quite different filter. However, our primary goal was to demonstrate the possibilities inherent in this technology."

Burundi gets $2 billion aid pledge, UN says

GENEVA (Reuters) - Donors have pledged more than $2 billion for Burundi's 2012-2015 development strategy to help the central African nation rebuild after civil war, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

"We ended up with more than $2 billion registered commitments at the conference," Pamphile Muderega of the National Aid Coordination Committee said in a statement.

"This represents a doubling of our already optimistic expectations," he said.

The statement was issued by the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) at the end of two days of talks in Geneva, attended by more than 400 representatives from more than 50 governments and the private sector as well as the European Union, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and African Development Bank.

The World Bank pledged $440 million, and the United States and EU made firm commitments, UNDP spokesman Adam Rogers said.

Burundi's poverty-reduction strategy focuses on growth, job creation and development of the private sector, with agribusiness, tourism and mining seen as key drivers of growth.

The government has projected this year's growth at around 4 percent. It relies heavily on external aid to fund spending with donors expected to provide 60 percent of its 2012 budget.

Burundi expects its economy to expand by 5 percent annually over the next three to four years, below the rate needed to lift it out of poverty, finance minister Tabu Abdallah said in an interview with Reuters in Bujumbura last week.

With relative peace since rebels joined the government in 2009 after almost two decades of civil war, it is now working to quit the list of least developed countries and to start self-financing its national budget by 2025.

"Burundi is now out of the post-conflict period and is truly committed to the path of development," President Pierre Nkurunziza said in the UNDP statement.
